Papel Amate is an art form with pre-Hispanic origins. Originally used for rituals by village shamans, the Otomi of Puebla later used it as a canvas for painting. The paper is crafted from fig or mulberry tree bark. This technique has a 200-year history in southern Mexico. Still made in small villages along the Sierra de Puebla.
